How Much Coffee Do You Really Need To Survive A Work Day?

If there’s one thing that makes the rat race into something resembling bearable, it is coffee. Entering into the workaday world ungirded with a few slugs of caffeinated analgesic is foolish, if not downright impossible. But how much coffee does it take for a person to put up with all [waves hand around] this? A new survey recently sought to find the answer, and honestly, it’s not as much as I would have thought.

As reported by Food & Wine, the survey is the work of market research firm OnePoll, undertaken on behalf of Flavia, an office beverage system manufacturer owned by Lavazza North America. For the survey, OnePoll asked 2,050 US-based office workers about their workday drinking habits. The answer to pretty much every question posed by the marketing firm was, of course, coffee.

For a whopping 67% of respondents, a hot cup of coffee was their preferred first drink of the day. 47% also said they could go for an iced coffee to start their work day. For a majority of those polled, drinking coffee was a foundational part of their early morning routine, right up there with getting organized and catching up on emails.

So coffee is important, but how much exactly do the majority of respondents need in order to feel productive? According to 77% of those polled, the minimum requirement is two or more cups, which honestly feels kinda low. Unless, the “or more” part is doing most of the heavy lifting, in which case I agree.

Really, you don’t need some clipboard to tell you how much coffee makes a cubicle seem less suffocating to you. You already know, you’re living it. But it is nonetheless nice to know that your experience of making it through the 9–5 doldrums in not a unique one. There’s solidarity in numbers, and solace in coffee.
